More than 800 nursing leaders gather in Canberra for ACN National Nursing Forum

Australian College of Nursing 2 mins read

The Australian College of Nursing’s signature event, the National Nursing Forum (NNF), is taking place this week at the National Convention Centre Canberra, bringing together more than 800 delegates and over 40 exhibitors under the theme “Courage, Compassion, Connection – Empowering Nurses for the Future.”

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Mark Butler, will address the Forum on Thursday 24 July, delivering the Ministerial Address and announcing the winner of the sixth annual Health Minister’s Award for Nursing Trailblazers.

The award is Australia’s premier recognition of nurses who are transforming the nation’s health and aged care systems through leadership and innovation.

This year’s three finalists are:

  • Professor Michelle Barakat-Johnson, who has revolutionised wound care delivery through the Wound Care Command Centre, Australia’s first hybrid model of specialist wound care, launched in 2023 at the Royal Prince Alfred Virtual Hospital in Sydney.
  • Kaitlyn Cooke, who created Ecodefend, a fully plastic-free, compostable, medical-grade face mask that decomposes into organic material after 180 days and can be repurposed as biochar feed.
  • Dr Andrea Taylor MACN, who developed the Geriatric Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI), a nurse-led, evidence-based strategy designed to meet the unique needs of older adults from the moment they arrive at hospital.

The Commonwealth Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Professor Alison McMillan PSM MACN, will address nursing workforce sustainability. For the first time in Australia, the renewed definition of ‘nursing’ and ‘a nurse’ will be unveiled by Professor Jill White FACN.

ACN’s new President will be announced during the three-day forum, which will also feature sessions on workforce development, nurse-led models of care, scope of practice, digital health innovations, planetary health, clinical advances, and much more.

Special highlights include a tri-nations panel on combating racism in nursing, the Fellowship Ceremony, and a presentation from Associate Professor Jason Mills FACN on compassionate leadership.

Misguided ‘tough on crime’ policies leading to Closing the Gap failures: Jesuit Social Services

As Australia marks National Closing the Gap Day, new data released by the Productivity Commission’s Closing the Gap dashboard shows that Australia is on track to meet only four of the 19 targets and that Australia is going backwards on key targets - the rate of suicide, adult imprisonment, the number of children developmentally on track, and children in out-of-home care. “The Productivity Commission’s updated Closing the Gap results are shocking but not surprising. Governments around Australia have celebrated “tough on crime” policies and increases in the number of prison beds. These misplaced priorities lie at the heart of these…

Monash researchers launch ‘OZ-ABCD’ tool to curb medication harm in aged care

Researchers at Monash University, together with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and medication safety experts, have developed the first national consensus list of medicines with a high risk of harm in Australian residential aged care. Published in the Australasian Journal on Ageing, the study identified 15 high-risk medications or medication classes that require specialised monitoring in aged care settings. These medications carry a significant risk of serious harm or death if misused or used in error. Health professionals and health service organisations are required to have systems in place to identify and mitigate the risks associated with high-risk medications…

Rising Gold policy premiums reflects growing healthcare costs and need for reform

The rising cost of Gold health insurance policies highlights the deeper challenges Australia’s health system is facing as the population ages and the cost of delivering care continues to soar. CEO of Private Healthcare Australia, Dr Rachel David, said the higher increases for some Gold policies reflect the reality that these products cover the most complex and costly medical treatment that is likely to be accessed within the next 12 months. “Gold policies cover services such as inpatient mental health care, weight loss surgery, reproductive services, pregnancy and birth, and joint replacements, as well as other high-cost hospital treatments,” Dr…
