CGT discount inquiry report demands bold action on housing
The Senate inquiry report into the capital gains tax discount adds to mounting evidence that the investor tax break is making Australia’s housing crisis worse, with social housing advocates warning the federal government can not afford to delay reform. The report handed down on Tuesday highlighted that the CGT discount, in combination with negative gearing, is driving up home prices and worsening inequality, while foregoing much-needed revenue that could fund social housing. Court victory confirms universities owe millions in backpay to casual academics
Thousands of casual academics are owed millions of dollars in backpay after a critical intervention from the National Tertiary Education Union led to a landmark court decision. The Full Federal Court has overturned a decision from last year, which found that award-covered casual academics could be required to perform effectively unlimited marking as part of the "rolled-up" hourly rate they receive for lecture and tutorial delivery.
