Slow start to flu season means there is still time to get vaccinated
The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP)is urging people to visit their GPs to receive their annual flu vaccination following on from last year’s record number of flu cases, with 2025 theworst year on record. Case numbers in 2026areonly one thirdofthe 98,447 cases reported in January–May 2025 or the 61,525 reported in June 2025 alone. TheNational Notifiable Diseases Surveillance Systemreports there have been around 36,800 notifications for lab confirmed influenza in 2026 so far. “We are seeing fewer cases of the flu than last year, but that doesn’t mean we can be complacent,” RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said. “Wecan’tpredict…

Monash and FZU researchers build the world’s smallest QR code atom by atom
Researchers from the Monash University School of Physics and Astronomy and the Czech Academy of Sciences have created what is believed to be the world’s smallest scannable QR code, measuring just 50 by 50 nm2. That’s more than 1000 times smaller in width than a human hair, and almost 800 times smaller in area than the current Guinness World Record holder. Using an ultra-precise scanning tunnelling microscope, the team carefully positioned individual silver atoms one by one onto a surface to construct the tiny QR code, which can still be scanned using a mobile phone. “This is a playful demonstration…

Bubble problem solved: linking porous electrode design to green hydrogen production
UNSW researchers use precise 3D imaging to reveal how trapped bubbles affect the efficacy of electrolysers in the production of green hydrogen. Hydrogen could be the key to a clean energy future, but a tiny problem has been holding it back: bubbles. In apaperpublished in Energy & Environmental Science, a multidisciplinary team of UNSW researchers, in collaboration with researchers from TotalEnergies and EPFL, has found a new way to boost the efficiency of green hydrogen production. Their solution focuses on optimising the design of electrolysers – the systems used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity – which,…
