25,000 flu cases by March means it’s time to vaccinate: RACGP

With 24,800 flu cases already reported at the end of March 2026 and following the worst flu year on record, the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has called on patients to roll up their sleeves and visit their GPs to receive an annual flu shot. In each month from August 2025–January 2026, more deaths were associated with influenza than COVID-19. Meanwhile, flu vaccination coverage remained low. By the end of August 2025, just 25.7% of children aged six months–five years,…

Tenants Victoria urges renters to appeal above-CPI rent increases

Tenants Victoria is urging Victorian renters who receive a rent increase above the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to challenge it, as new laws come into force today making CPI an additional mandatory consideration in assessing excessive hikes. With Melbourne CPI currently sitting at 3.3%, the peak body for renters is encouraging renters receiving increases above that figure to seek a free assessment through Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) if the increase feels excessive. CPI is now included as one of the factors that CAV and VCAT will now take into consideration, and Tenants Victoria is keen to measure its impact on…

Depression may harm young people’s physical health long before any obvious signs appear

A groundbreaking new study tracking almost 2,000 young Australians for a decade has challenged a long-held assumption about depression and physical health, finding disrupted sleep was a stronger predictor of later insulin resistance rather than weight gain. The research from the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre found that weight gain is not the main reason depression is linked to later insulin resistance, which is an early marker of diabetes and heart disease. Instead, the research points to irregular sleep-wake cycles and ongoing sleep disruption as a key and often overlooked pathway connecting mental health issues in youth to…
