Continuing ARENA support for industrial decarbonisation

Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) 2 mins read
  • Media:

On behalf of the Australian Government, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has today launched the $40 million National Industrial Transformation (NIT) Program aimed at supporting the reduction of scope 1 and scope 2 emissions at existing or planned industrial facilities in Australia.

The NIT Program is an update to the former Industrial Energy Transformation Studies Program (IETS) to more comprehensively support industrial decarbonisation.

The NIT Program allows a more streamlined and seamless integration with the recently launched $400 million Industrial Transformation Stream (ITS). The revisions allow support for industrial emissions abatement across Australia, as well as helping to expand the program scope to now include applications from the pre-feasibility, feasibility and FEED stages through to trial, demonstration and deployment activities. Former IETS funding has now been reallocated to the NIT Program.

The objectives of National Industrial Transformation are to:

  • Support industrial facilities in Australia to reduce emissions in line with Australia’s 2030 emissions reduction goals and transition to net zero by 2050.
  • Improve technology readiness and commercial readiness of renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency technologies and electrification technologies that will result in a significant reduction in scope 1 and/or scope 2 emissions or improve the energy efficiency of an industrial process or processes.
  • Encourage technology demonstration, collaboration and knowledge sharing across industry and regions.
  • Support upskilling of industrial workforce in new decarbonisation activities.

Unlike the recently launched ITS Program, the NIT Program is not constrained to regional, National Greenhouse Energy Reporting (NGER) facilities.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller said: “The National Industrial Transformation Program will expand the type of applications that can be received, adding another vital tool to our industrial decarbonisation efforts.”

“With industry accounting for approximately 44% of Australian emissions, we need to target sectors such as agriculture, water, mining and manufacturing to assist them progress towards net zero. ARENA’s funding model is well placed to make a real impact.

Both the Industrial Transformation Stream and the National Industrial Transformation Program are now open for applications.

Applicants are encouraged to contact ARENA at industrialtransformation@arena.gov.au to discuss the most appropriate Program and to visit the NIT webpage for further information.

Australians for Affordable Energy

Before we decide where to dump nuclear waste, let’s answer the bigger questions

Australians for Affordable Energy is urging caution following calls for South Australia to become a nuclear power hub and waste storage site, warning fundamental questions about nuclear remain unanswered. Alexander Downer’s comments advocating for nuclear power plants in South Australia and positioning the state as a nuclear waste storage site are deeply concerning given there has been no comprehensive discussion around nuclear power. The nuclear debate must go beyond location discussion and first address economic and logistic concerns, Australians for Affordable Energy spokesperson Jo Dodds said. "Before we even talk about where to dump nuclear waste, we need to ask…

Statement regarding Whyalla steelworks

Paul Farrow, AWU National Secretary:The Australian Workers’ Union strongly backs urgent government intervention to secure the future of Whyalla Steelworks and its workforce. The steelworks is a critical pillar of Australian industry, and the reckless financial mismanagement of GFG Alliance cannot be allowed to jeopardise its survival.Placing Whyalla Steelworks into administration is the right move to stabilise the business and pave the way for a long-term transition to green steel. The AWU calls on the Federal and South Australian governments to act swiftly and decisively to take back control of the plant, protect thousands of jobs, and ensure Australia remains…

Whyalla steel’s failure would leave Australia highly vulnerable to China: new report

A new report from the McKell Institute’s SA branch has found that Australia would become dangerously dependent on Chinese steel imports if the Whyalla steelworks were to fail. The new research identifies that the collapse of Whyalla steel would leave Australia with a nation-wide inability to produce long steel products. This would render Australia one of the very few advanced economies without any sovereign capacity to support its domestic infrastructure needs. Among the report’s findings: Long steel is vital for Australia’s transport, defence, construction and manufacturing industries Whyalla steel is the only steelworks in the country capable of producing long…
