First biologic treatment on the PBS for uncontrolled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

NUCALA (mepolizumab) is now listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for adults with uncontrolled COPD and raised blood eosinophils as an add-on to inhaler triple therapy. [1,2] In 2022, approximately 496,000 Australians aged 45 and over were estimated to be living with COPD, a progressive lung disease that can make breathing difficult. [3] COPD patients with raised blood eosinophils have an increased risk of flare-ups of symptoms. A spectator in his 30s was taken to Murray Bridge Soldiers Memorial Hospital for treatment of an arm injury following a suspected lightning strike while racing was underway at The Bend Motorsport Park, Tailem Bend, today.
